North Gwinnett vs. South Gwinnett - Game of the Week
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - It's North versus South... Bulldogs versus Comets... The Battle of Gwinnett County.
South Gwinnett fans were going to love this one, but not before the guys from the North put points on the board.
Cade Fortin hit Tyler Goodson to the 5-yard line. It led to a North Gwinnett lead, 3-0.
Seth Johnston is South Gwinnett's senior quarterback and he had an MVP night, first with a 30-yard run taking it into the end zone and pumping the score up to 7-3 for a first quarter lead.
Johnston can pass, but he loves to run. He ran another one in, this one for 52-yards to make it 14-3.
When a player scores for South Gwinnett, they give them a special belt to wear. Johnston wore it twice.
But the Bulldogs fought back with a Fortin to LJ Fisher connection, great catch and even better run making it 14-10.
Skip to the fourth quarter and a field goal closes the game to one point, 14-13 South Gwinnett.
Javonni Cunningham appeared to put his team out in front on a punt return, but the play was called back.
South got the ball back, and Jalen Samuels broke loose. He takes it to the 11-yard line. From there the Comets kicked a field goal with 1:50 left on the clock. They iced it right there.
South Gwinnett wins the opening round of the playoffs over North 17-13.
The Comets are going to the second round of the playoffs.
“Yeah, that was playoff football. That was great county football. Two teams that battle all the time, but playoff football you got to play all four quarters and our kids did that tonight. Been a couple time when they don't break. These guys are solid as a rock. They have been and I'm very proud of them and proud of our school,” said Coach John Small.
“Got to give credit to my offensive line. Defense played great. That was a great football team, great program we faced tonight, but you know when our backs are against the wall we find a way to get it done. We're going to the second round, baby,” Seth Johnston expressed.
South Gwinnett heads to Westlake next week for round two of the playoffs.
