North Atlanta Warriors win Team of the Week
ATLANTA - Our first High 5 Sports Team of the Week award for 2017 goes to the North Atlanta Warriors of head coach Jeremy Gainer. The Warriors matched their entire win total from last season (one) with an impressive 21-7 victory over perennial 6-AAAAA power Grady last Friday night.
High 5 Sports visited the team two weeks ago as part of our annual high school football caravan, and at that time it appeared spirit was on the rise at the APS high school known for its fine arts programs.
The student section recently created a Twitter account, @NAHSStudentSec with the sole purpose of supporting North Atlanta athletics. The students dubbed their section the "War Zone".
Gainer says he's noticed a change in his team this year, so he wasn't surprised by the upset win over the Grey Knights.
"While the state might be surprised that we pulled off a victory last Friday night, it was not a surprise to us," Gainer said. "We have tremendous respect for coach (Earthwind) Moreland and Grady High School and what they've done. They've been at a high level for a long, long time. We just want to be able to join the party."
The party gets started Thursday morning when Good Day Atlanta's Paul Milliken brings his high energy pep rally to North Atlanta High School and makes several live appearances with coaches, players, and students.
The Warriors get a pep rally and will receive the coveted Hand Trophy because their fan base out-voted four other schools on the High 5 Sports Facebook page for the honor. Gainer says the campus is buzzing with excitement as the team gains confidence, and the school prepares for the Thursday celebration.
"It's the first step of where we're trying to take this thing. Texts, emails, phone calls- all that good stuff has been coming through today. It's an exciting time to be a Warrior."
