Maria Guzman
Maria Guzman joined the FOX 5 news team in April 2026. She’s excited to call Atlanta home and explore everything Georgia has to offer.
Previously, Maria worked as a nightside multimedia journalist at WBIR, the NBC affiliate in Knoxville, Tennessee. There, she pitched, reported, wrote, shot and edited her own stories. She has covered everything from breaking news and natural disasters to crime, public health and stories that inspire change in local communities.
While in Knoxville, Maria was one of the first reporters to travel to the mountain communities of Appalachia to cover the devastation of Hurricane Helene. Through trusted community sources and relationships, she was the first reporter in Tennessee to break the news that the final missing Impact Plastics employee had been recovered. She reported extensively on Hurricane Helene, highlighting its impact on rural Appalachian communities, migrant workers and families rebuilding their lives.
During her three years in Knoxville, Maria also covered East Tennessee's ongoing battle with addiction, recovery and overdose prevention. Her reporting earned the Metro Drug Coalition's Media Advocacy Award. She also helped launch WBIR's award-winning "More Than a Number" series, which honored the lives and legacies of victims of violent crime beyond the headlines.
Maria's empathy and fluency in Spanish led to exclusive interviews with the family at the center of one of Knox County's most high-profile criminal cases involving a 'revenge killing' of a Costa Rican woman.
Born in Managua, Nicaragua, Maria immigrated to the United States at the age of six. Her immigration journey and childhood in Chicago inspired her passion for storytelling and journalism. She graduated from DePaul University, where she helped found the university's first Spanish-language student newspaper.
Maria has called Miami, Chicago, Knoxville and now Atlanta home. She looks forward to telling the stories that matter most to Georgians and becoming part of the communities she serves.
Outside of work, you can find Maria traveling with her husband, volunteering at church or working out.
