TERRA CEIA (FOX 13) - What was supposed to be a quiet day of fishing turned into a heart-pounding experience.
"It was just like any regular day starting out," said Robert Gudes.
Robert Gudes had a line in the water trying to snag a catch. Around 9:45 Sunday morning he was forced to take cover.
"The next thing I know, it just started getting more intense, debris everywhere. I tried to pick up my buckets and run, the next thing I hear is a boom," he said.
A waterspout formed near the south end of the Skyway Bridge.
It crossed over a construction site and damaged equipment.
A boat was overturned and many signs were knocked to the ground.
"I figured it would just stay in the water and dissipate, but then it hit land," said Lee Dove.
Dove began following the waterspout, recording its every move. Before it dissipated, the funnel twisted a U.S. Postal Service semi truck.
"It looked like a paper truck and it looked like an explosion. Papers were everywhere," said Dove.
Mail was scattered on the road and littered the waterway.
"The truck fell over on the side and then it flipped over on its wheels. I could see the driver the whole time holding onto the wheels," said Dove.
Troopers and others worked to gather up mail. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Video of the waterspout caught by Lee Dove shows waterspout tearing the semi to pieces.
