Officials in DeKalb County continued repairs after a water main break opened a sinkhole in a busy intersection and caused a major sewage spill.

The break happened Tuesday night along Beech Drive at Memorial Drive. County officials said a 36-inch main was hit while a contractor was installing fiber optic cable. The water quickly filled up an 8-inch sewage main causing an overflow.

Watershed officials said about 347,250 gallons of sewage runoff was discharged into nearby Cobb Creek.

A massive sinkhole formed in the intersection because of the break. Beech Road is expected to be closed for the next few days and traffic cones are blocking the right turning lane on Memorial Drive at the intersection.
