The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is using virtual reality (VR) headsets to treat Veterans dealing with chronic pain that lasts more than three months.

What we know:

Veterans approved for the 8-week treatment program can use the RelieVRx virtual reality therapy at home.   VA says the VA Immersive program combines cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness techniques and pain education through immersive VR experiences and allows Veterans to "refine coping skills, develop habits and establish the foundation for lasting pain relief."

What they're saying:

The VA says the RelieVRx is part of their larger effort to expand non-pharmacologic pain care options and reduce dependence on opioids.

By the numbers:

So far, the VA has deployed over 4,700 VR headsets across more than 170 VA medical centers and outpatient clinics in all 50 states, as well as in Puerto Rico, Guam and American Samoa with more than 10,000 Veterans using the technology.
