Women seeking fertility treatment are getting financial relief after the Trump administration reached a deal with pharmaceutical company EMD Serono to lower the cost of a common fertility medication.

The backstory:

EMD Serono's Gonal-f is among several drugs frequently used by patients going through IVF treatments — which involve using hormones to trigger ovulation, producing multiple eggs that are retrieved from the ovaries to be fertilized or frozen. The drugs can be expensive, often costing patients thousands of dollars for a single IVF cycle.

The discounted drug will be available on TrumpRx and pricing will vary based on income.

The deal was announced Thursday afternoon in the Oval Office, where President Trump also announced new federal guidance encouraging employers to offer fertility benefits separately from major medical insurance.

Dig deeper:

Joining Mr. Trump was Samantha Busch, IVF advocate and wife of NASCAR champion Kyle Busch.  After struggling with their own infertility issues, the couple created the Bundle of Joy Fund to provide some much-needed funds for families also dealing with the stresses of infertility. They donated $47,000 to five families for in vitro fertilization treatments to start a family.

What's next:

Trump said the Food and Drug Administration will also be working with EMD Serono to expedite approval of another one of its fertility drugs available in Europe, called Pergoveris.
