Fields was patrolling I-75 in Cobb County around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday when he saw a black Chevrolet Silverado going over 90 mph. When he tried to pull the truck over, the driver sped off. Trooper Fields chased the pickup for about 10 miles, with two other troopers, and they attempted a "box-in maneuver" to bring it to a slow stop.

Israel Vladimir Rodriguez, 26, got out of the truck and began shooting at the troopers, who returned fire. Fields was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with a police escort.

Rodriguez, who was also taken to Kennestone, died Wednesday night from his injuries in the shootout.

FOX 5 will continue to follow Fields' recovery and provide future updates. You can send cards to GSP Post 9, 3993 Aviation Circle, Atlanta, GA 30336.
