Train derails, spills fuel in North Georgia

PICKENS COUNTY. Ga. - Hazmat teams are working to contain an oil spill after a train derailed in North Georgia Tuesday evening.

While the train, which derailed near the Pickens-Gilmer County Line on Whitestone Road, stayed upright after going off the track, it has been leaking fuel.

Teams from multiple counties are now working to stop the fuel from entering and contaminating a nearby stream.

No one was injured in the derailing and evacuation was not needed, officials said.

The cause of the derailment is now being investigated by the Georgia Northeastern Railroad.
