Three men have been sentenced to life in prison for murdering a man on his 21st birthday. The Fulton County District Attorney said it was an orange traffic cone that broke the case.

Police said they were called out to the Preserve at Academy townhomes off of Wade Creek Road the morning of April 21, 2016. Officers found the body of Kadarius Cortez Medlock, who died from an apparent single gunshot wound.

According to investigators, Dontravious Mahone pretended to be a construction worker and placed the cone outside Medlock's Alpharetta home just before the murder.

Mahone, Michael Dawson, and Jamel Gines then broke in, ransacked the house and shot Medlock in the head.

Investigators tracked down the killers after discovering the cone was purchased at a store not long before the murder and used surveillance video from there to identify them.
