Toddler thrown from vehicle during multi-car crash in Clayton County
CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Clayton County Police said a reckless driver is responsible for a deadly crash that killed a toddler Thursday evening. According to police, eight cars were involved in the crash that happened just before 6 p.m. on Old Dixie Highway.
Witnesses told FOX 5 News it was very chaotic. John Aiken was in his car on Old Dixie when it happened.
"The cars were spinning around, a Charger was spinning and hit the other 4 or 5 cars. Everybody was just crying and everything. They said the baby just flew out the windshield," said Aiken.
Investigators said the driver of the Charger ran a red light initiating the crash.
Clayton County police confirm a 2-year old girl was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. In all the chaos, Aiken said it took several minutes for someone to find the child. Three other victims, including a 4-year old girl, were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
A portion of Old Dixie Highway near Holiday Boulevard was shut down for close to five hours as investigators worked the scene. Smashed cars and car parts could be seen strewn across the road.
Juanita Crumbley was driving by and says she felt compelled to stop.
"I seen it and I just stopped to pray," said Crumbley.
No arrest was made at the scene, but investigators said charges are pending.
