STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Stone Mountain Park’s private operator filed formal plans to cease operations in June, a move expected to impact nearly 500 workers.
Park operator files layoff notice
What we know:
A formal WARN notice has been filed reflecting the decision to end operations, which could force the layoff of 497 workers.
The job titles impacted by the closure range from ambassadors and attractions leads to executive leadership and specialized maintenance technicians.
Transition follows financial losses
The backstory:
Thrive SMP LLC took over park operations in 2022, but reported operating at a $1.6 million loss in April 2025.
This February, Thrive and the state-operated Stone Mountain Memorial Association reached an agreement to terminate their 10-year contract early at the end of May.
Officials promise smooth handover
What they're saying:
In a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta, Stone Mountain Park officials addressed the upcoming transition. "We have a shared commitment to collaboration, with Thrive SMP, the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, and the park’s future operator, working closely to ensure a smooth transition and support the continued long-term success of Stone Mountain Park."
Employment status remains uncertain
What we don't know:
It is currently unclear if the 497 impacted employees will have the opportunity to reapply for their positions once the new operator takes over.
While a new company has been named, specific hiring plans for the current staff have not been disclosed.
New operator to take the reins
What's next:
Stone Mountain Hospitality LLC, a subsidiary of Aramark Destinations, was announced earlier this week as the new private operator.
They are expected to begin their oversight of the park’s attractions and operations following Thrive's departure in June.
