State police investigating shooting involving officers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama man has been hospitalized after being wounded in a shooting involving police in a Birmingham neighborhood.

Birmingham Police Lt. Sean Edwards tells news outlets officers received a call about 6:10 p.m. Tuesday officers from a resident who said a man dressed in black was walking around the area with a gun. Uniformed officers driving unmarked vehicles found the man while on patrol.

Edwards says the officers identified themselves to the man, and as they were doing so the man began to shoot. The man was struck during a shootout with police.

The man is recovering at UAB Hospital, and his injuries aren't believed to be life-threatening.

Further information hasn't been released. The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case.
