Spalding County identifies inmate who died in custody

Officials have confirmed they are investigating an inmate who died while in custody at the Spalding County jail.

Sheriff Darrell Dix says his deputies were alerted to an inmate in distress around 2 p.m. on Friday.

Medics attempted first aid and transported 44-year-old Denver Perkins by ambulance to WellStar Spalding Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Perkins was awaiting trial on child molestation and aggravated sexual battery charges.

The cause of Perkins' death has not yet been released.

The GBI is involved in the investigation.
