Son of Atlanta assistant police chief injured in Midtown crash

ATLANTA - Authorities have released the names of the off-duty officer and his passenger who were inside a car which slammed into a wall early Wednesday morning along Peachtree Street. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating is investigating if the deadly crash was the result of street racing.

According to police, an off-duty officer identified by Atlanta police as being Officer Shawn Jones, was driving a white and blue Dodge Challenger when he lost control of the vehicle on Peachtree Street near Spring Street, and struck a wall. His passenger, identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office as Ramish Attai, 20, of Atlanta, died as a result of the impact.

Atlanta police said Officer Jones is the son of Assistant Chief Shawn Jones. He is assigned to the Airport Division on the morning watch and has been with the department since November 2011, according to police.

Witness Polo 2 G, a performer, said he was heading to the studio around 2:45 a.m. when he saw the Challenger and another trailing car scream around the corner, heading north on Peachtree:

“In my mind, I was saying, ‘Please slow down. That's Dead Man's Curve.’ I heard a scream, then a horrific crash,” the witness told FOX 5.

Police said they are questioning the driver and passenger of the second, trailing car. Police only identified them as a male and female. At this time, no arrests have been made.

Officer Jones was severely injured and underwent surgery at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Georgia State Patrol investigators took pictures and reconstructed the deadly crash early Wednesday, ahead of rush hour. Police told FOX 5 speed was definitely a factor in the crash.
