Smokestack Falls on Track Hoe

Demolishing an historic smokestack in Pell City, Alabama was far from an easy task.

The first blast left a just a hole in the 158 foot tall tower and after another attempt, the smokestack remained standing.

Next, a track hoe came in to knock it down, but the structure came crashing down on top of the equipment. The driver stayed inside of his cab and somehow he was able to walk away unhurt.

The smokestack was built with nearly 3 million pounds of material back in the 1800s, so that might have had something to do with the difficulty.
