Smyrna police have released a sketch of a man who they said attempted to kidnap an 11-year-old girl earlier this month.

Cobb County Schools said that the Campbell Middle School student was walking home from school on August 5 when she was approached by a man. Officials said the girl quizzed the man who could not give the name of her mother. That was enough to make the child suspicious. She darted away to a nearby home to get help.

According to the Smyrna Police Department, the man was last seen driving a black 4-door truck. Investigators aren't sure about the make or model of the vehicle.

Following the attempted kidnapping, school officials asked parents to speak to their children about "stranger danger" situations and said police will be stepping up patrols in the Campbell community. The school sent home this letter.

School staffers told the children to go straight home when school is over and try to walk in groups until they get to their streets.

Smyrna Police said the suspect is described as a white man in his 30s with a brown goatee.

Detectives have created a composite sketch of the suspect and hope someone will be able to identify him. Anyone with information is asked to call Smyrna Police at 770-434-6666.
