Sheriff: Man died of self-inflicted gunshot wound during standoff
ACWORTH, Ga. - Authorities said a Paulding County man who was involved in a standoff with deputies for several hours on Memorial Day was found dead inside the home.
The Paulding County Sheriff’s Office said a SWAT team robot was sent into the home located on Heights Lane just after 11 p.m. They found the body of the man, whose name has not yet been released, inside, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Acworth neighborhood was on lockdown for several hours after deputies said the man fired shots at them. Deputies said the bullet hit a window, sending glass into the air, and injuring one of the deputies.
Deputies said they tried to use gas canisters to end the standoff, but it didn’t have the desired effect.
Residents were allowed to return to their homes around midnight.
Deputies said the original call to the home was for a suicidal man.
