Authorities are searching for a Walton County fugitive who the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office said led deputies on a chase around the time school was letting out on Tuesday.

Deputies spent Wednesday searching for Jeremy Cruse. According to the Gilmer County Schools, Ellijay Police and the Georgia State Patrol were chased the 34-year-old to Gentry Drive. Deputies said Cruse then ditched the car and ran away into the woods.

Deputies said the Emergency Room, Nursing Home, Gilmer High School, Gilmer Middle School, and Mountainview Elementary were all placed on lockdown around 4:15 p.m.

After searching overnight, investigators believe Cruse had moved on from the area, but security at the school was stepped up Wednesday as a precaution.

As of late Wednesday, Cruse was still at large, but a passenger, who also ran at the end of the chase, was taken into custody. Deputies said Cristy Shetter was booked into the Gilmer County Jail. Her charges were not immediately available.
