It was a close call overnight for a Roswell police officer.

Investigators said Officer Brian McKenzie, a 5-year veteran, was on a routine patrol when a driver in a car passing his marked cruiser opened fire.

Officials said the shooting happened at Old Roswell Road and Commerce Parkway just before 1 a.m. Friday. The bullets did not strike Officer McKenzie or the squad car.

The man who opened fire has been identified as 21-year-old Victor Majia Nunez. Following the shooting, Nunez then led the officer on a chase before crashing a stolen Ford Explorer on Commerce Parkway.

Officer McKezie arrested the suspect, who was taken to the Roswell Detention Center.

Detectives are now questioning Nunez about his motivation, but said his cooperation has been "limited." It's unclear if the unrest in Dallas triggered the violent attempt.

According to police, charges are pending but will likely include aggravated assault on a police officer, reckless driving, possession of methamphetamine, fleeing and eluding, as well as other charges related to the stolen vehicle.
