Possible Native American remains found on future museum site

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) — Archaeologists digging on the new site for a living history museum in Columbus have found a human bone fragment in an area thought to have been inhabited by Creek American Indians.

News outlets report the Muscogee County coroner's office determined the bone fragment was not contemporary and that the site did not constitute a crime scene.

The discovery was made recently as archaeologists were working on the area that's the future home of the new Historic Westville. Archaeologists are going to analyze the bone's origins and notify the Creek nation.

The museum, which is moving to Columbus from Lumpkin, focuses on southern history and culture. It is expected to open in late 2018 and one of its new interpretive areas will focus on the history of the Creek people.
