Police: Young Dad Shot, Killed in Cobb County

Cobb County detectives are investigating a shooting early Wednesday morning that left a 23-year-old man dead in Mableton.

Calls for help came in around 12:30 a.m. after residents at the Windwood Apartments, located in the 6900 block of Shenandoah Trail, heard several gunshots. Officers arrived to find a man, identified by family members as Tyrell Tavaris, bleeding in the breezeway of one of the buildings. They said he'd been struck by at least one bullet and didn't survive.

With tears streaming down their faces, family members of Tavaris arrived at the scene to see where their loved one took his last breath. They said the young father leaves behind a 9-month-old baby and had another baby on the way.

Loved ones want to know why Tavaris was shot and left to die. He didn't live at the complex.

Investigators are now interviewing neighbors and a search for the killer continues Wednesday morning. They collected evidence at the scene and are also searching for a motive.

Tavaris' father was a 20-year veteran with the Atlanta Police Department.
