A 19-year-old is in the hospital after police said she was shot during a failed robbery attempt at a Jonesboro apartment complex Sunday night.

The shooting happened at around 9:00 p.m. at the Chase Ridge Apartments off of Highway 85.

When police got to the scene, they found 19-year-old Sijeria Parks with a gunshot wound to her head.  Paramedics rushed Parks to a local hospital in critical condition.

According to Clayton County Police, Parks invited a man to her apartment after communicating with him through social media.  When the man arrived at her home, police said three armed men were waiting for him and tried to rob him.

The victim "fired his gun at the suspects in an attempt to get away," police said.  Officials believe a bullet struck Parks in the head as she tried to escape the gunfire.

Police said the would-be robbery victim called police to report the shooting and is cooperating with the investigation. Officers have not been able to locate the three male suspects in the case.

Neighbors were surprised to hear about the violence in what they said is a normally quiet complex.

"They need to go get a job and stop trying to rob folks, but the tables turned on them last night," said Cynthia McKenzie, who has lived at the apartments for seven years.

Parks is a mother of two young children.
