FAIRBURN, Ga. (FOX 5 Atlanta) - Police have released a new photo of a Fairburn police officer who was rushed to the hospital on Monday after a driver ran him over.
On Tuesday, Fairburn police said Officer Levar Sims was still recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital, sharing a picture of him giving a thumbs up.
Sims was hurt in a parking lot on Senoia Road after being called in as back-up on a suspicious vehicle call. Police say once Officer Sims arrived, he approached a pick-up truck that Taurean McShan was driving and started talking to the suspect.
That's when Fairburn police say things escalated to a physical altercation where McShan ran over the officer's torso with the truck.
According to police, Sims was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in serious condition. Officials say the officer suffered a fractured spine and lacerated liver. He underwent surgery Monday morning.
A GoFundMe account has been created to help Officer Sims with medical expenses. To donate, click here.
Authorities have located the burgundy truck McShan was driving, but have not found the suspect. They say he has a criminal record for previous drugs and weapons charges. The abandoned vehicle was rented in Memphis, Tennessee. Authorities say McShan is from Memphis.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police. Crime Stoppers Atlanta is offering up to a $5,000 reward for information leading to McShane's arrest.
