College Park Police are searching for a killer after a shooting at a Godby Road apartment complex.

Police said it happened Thursday around 9 p.m. at the Southampton Apartment Complex located at 3100 Godby Road in College Park.

Selena Cokley, Zerrick Cokley's mom, said she had a bad feeling when her son did not answer her call Thursday night.

"I tried calling his phone. No answer. I kept calling his phone. No answer, " a tearful Selena Cokley told FOX 5's Aungelique Proctor.

"He was so sweet. He was very humble. He was the peacemaker," Cokley reflected.

Cokley and her daughters are at a loss for words.

The family wants to know who would kill the soft-spoken gentleman who was known as the mediator who never looked for trouble.

Detectives said someone shot and killed the 23-year-old late Thursday at the South Hampton Estates apartments and then took off in a black sedan. There were witnesses to the shooting.

Officers don't know what led to the shooting but the family said Zerrick was with his cousin and did not have a gun.

"I heard they were shooting and he was running and they were saying they heard the gunshots and that was it," Cokley recalled.

As they plan to bury a loved one gone too soon, Zerrick's mother has one wish she prays will come true.

"I just want whoever did it, if it was an accident just admit you did it rather than holding back. We want closure and want to know what really happen to him," Cokley said.
