Police search for escaped inmate accused of attacking jailer
JASPER, Ala. (AP) — Authorities are still searching for one of two inmates accused of assaulting a jailer during an escape earlier this week.
Al.com (http://bit.ly/2gP6BNg ) reports that Zackary Casey and Justin Helton escaped from the Jasper City Jail on Monday morning.
Jasper police Sgt. David Mize says the two attacked the corrections officer and took the keys.
Mize says the jailer received minor injuries and will be OK.
Authorities captured Helton a few blocks away from the jail early Tuesday but they were unable to find Casey.
Mize says Casey was two weeks into his 90-day jail sentence at the time of the escape. Helton was halfway through his 40-day sentence. It is unclear why they were in jail.
Both are now facing multiple charges, including first-degree escape and assault.
