A home invasion suspect got more than he bargained for after breaking into a southeast Atlanta house Monday night, police said.

Police said around 11:30 p.m. Monday, an adult male suspect used a window to go inside a Portland Avenue house. Inside, he was confronted by the resident, also an adult male. Police said the man living in the house heard a noise, grabbed his gun and fired at least one shot in the hallway, striking the suspect.

Investigators said paramedics rushed the suspect to Grady Memorial Hospital, where doctors managed to stabilize him. He's listed in critical condition. The resident wasn't injured.

The investigation into the shooting continues, but police don't expect to file any charges against the resident. The same can't be said about the suspect, whose identity isn't known.
