Police: Man beaten to death with bat, three arrested

Three people have been charged in a disturbing case in Gwinnett County.

On Friday, December 7, officers were called to the 4300 block of Leland Place Lane in unincorporated Lawrenceville around 10:15 p.m. regarding suspicious activity. Responding officers found a man, identified as 32-year-old Marcos Guerra, of Dacula, with "significant" injuries to his face. Guerra was unconscious and taken to the hospital.

Gwinnett County Police said Guerra was listed in critical condition over the weekend, then on Sunday, he was declared dead, with no brain activity.

Police said when the victim was found, he wallet and cell phone were missing.

Detectives identified three suspects involved in the case as Glenda Carter, 20, Russell Williams, 22 and 21-year-old Zarius Williams. At the time of the attack, Carter and Russell Williams were in the process of being evicted from the Leland Place apartment complex. Wiliams’ younger brother, Zarius, was also in the area.

While investigating Guerra’s death, police learned about another victim, 48-year-old Simon Fuentes who was taken to the hospital around 2 p.m. on Sunday. The second victim told investigators he was assaulted with a baseball bat by two black males and a white female, believed to be the three named suspects.

Fuentes is expected to survive after suffering head trauma and a broken arm. He did not know the other victim.

Investigators believe the robbery was the motive behind both of the attacks.

The three suspects were arrested on Monday at a Red Roof Inn in Norcross.
