Police: Kidnapping was actually an elaborate robbery plot
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - Police in Gwinnett County said a previously reported kidnapping was actually an elaborate robbery plot.
Warrants have been obtained for two suspects, Christina Day, 20, and Timothy Wingfield, 30, both of Atlanta.
Day previously was thought to be the victim of a kidnapping, but a pre-planned armed robbery targeting the victim.
The investigation started Jan. 31 around 2 a.m. at the Crossland Economy Suites on Jimmy Carter Boulevard, not far from Buford Highway. Initially, police said a man and woman were at the hotel when a man came to their door with a gun. Police said he stole personal items from the man, took his car keys, allegedly snatched the woman, then fled in the male victim's vehicle.
The male victim then ran to a nearby Waffle House and called the police. Gwinnett County officers put a lookout for the car, which was later spotted and recovered in Chamblee.
Day has active warrants for Armed Robbery and Motor Vehicle Theft for her involvement in this criminal event.
Wingfield has active warrants for Armed Robbery, Motor Vehicle Theft, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
Anyone who sees either Day or Wingfield is asked to call the Gwinnett County Police Department at 770 513-5700 or Crime Stoppers at 404 577-8477.
