Police officers in McDonough are trying to find out what prompted an exchange of gunfire between two people at an apartment complex Monday afternoon.

It happened at the Estates at McDonough apartments off Nail Road. McDonough Police said initial reports indicate a woman showed up to meet a man at the apartment complex at 601 Nail Road.

"We just know she came to 601 to meet somebody, we do not know who," said Detective T. Spangenberg with the McDonough Police Department.

Police said the woman got into an argument with a man which led to both shooting each other. Detectives said the man she was arguing with was not the man she was supposed to meet.

"During the argument a fight broke out and both individuals were shot during the confrontation," said Detective Spangenberg.

Police said the man ran to the leasing office to let them know what had happened. Investigators said the man told them the woman was trying to rob him.

Investigators said both the man and woman were struck by the exchange of gunfire and both were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.

Residents said they were shocked to learn what happened in an area they said is usually very quiet.

"Nothing usually goes on around here so hearing someone got shot it’s almost like its unheard of," said resident, Denoyad Rozier.

Residents said the apartment complex is just over four years old.  Police said in that time they have never responded to anything like this.

The case is still under investigation.
