Police impersonator accused of rape

GAINESVILLE, Ga. - A Gainesville man is behind bars after police said he pretended to be an undercover officer to gain entry into a woman's hotel room to rape her.

Gainesville Police said 30-year-old Dionicio Perez knocked on a woman's door at the Motel 6 in January, pretending to be something he is not.

"He knocked on the door, stated he was an undercover law enforcement officer. The victim opened the door just enough so Perez could force his way into the room, and unfortunately that's when the rape was committed," said Sgt. Kevin Holbrook.

The news of the arrest of Perez was welcomed by women at the motel, including Candace Phillips.

"For you to impersonate a cop just to rape someone, it's wrong, and you have to be messed up in the head for that," said Phillips.

Gainesville police said it is unclear if Perez had been watching the victim over time. Investigators said Perez did not have a badge or gun, and was not wearing a uniform. Holbrook said the rape appeared to be a random crime.

Motel clerk Hannah Simmons had some advice for residents.

"I'm gonna tell them be careful. Make sure you lock your doors at all times. Make sure you don't let anybody in that you don't know," said Simmons.

Gainesville police said DNA evidence links Perez to the rape. They advise residents to always check who is at the door, even a police officer.

"Call 911 and they should be able to tell you that there is truly an officer at your residence," said Sgt. Holbrook.

Police said the arrest of Perez led to charges being dropped against a man who was erroneously charged. Investigators said they are also searching for other victims.

Perez is being held at the Hall County jail without bond.
