Police have identified a woman shot and killed while driving in southwest Atlanta Thursday morning as 24-year-old Shanna Smith.

Investigators said Smith was driving down Hadlock Street in her 2006 BMW 330I when she was shot in the head. She then crashed her vehicle into the woods nearby, according to police.

Police said a call came in about a vehicle fire around 5:30 a.m. Responding officers located Smith's vehicle and said the tires were smoking. She was found behind the wheel.

Smith was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after 6 a.m.

Police said 25 shell casings from three different weapons were discovered at the scene and neighbors said Smith’s vehicle was riddled with bullets with its windows busted out.

Homicide detectives spent most of the morning at the scene collecting evidence, but are still searching for the gunman.

Police aren't sure whether Smith was the target of the shooting or if she accidentally drove into the middle of a gun battle.
