Parents outraged over recent racial climate in Paulding County schools

PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. - Dozens of Paulding County parents said they want racial bullying to stop in their schools.

About 40 parents and representatives from the NAACP showed up at the Paulding County School District headquarters for a news conference demanding zero tolerance for racial slurs.

The group was organized after a five-second video went viral on social media showing North Paulding County High School Cheerleaders using the n-word as they ate McDonald’s.

Parents seize the opportunity to reveal lots of additional racial taunting that they said is going on in Paulding County schools.

"They've been called the n-word; they've been called monkey. My daughter spoke up last week for the first time. She's been speaking to teachers and the administration about this," parent Beverly Warren.

"I have been shocked by the things that I have seen such as punishments for students that are involved in altercations where it involves someone of color and someone who is not of color and the child who ends of being punished is the child of color," parent Margaret Bilodeau.

About 40 parents and NAACP members, with former DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James by their side, flooded the lobby and asked for a meeting. However, they were disappointed.

Superintendent Brian Otott was already meeting with six parents who also had racial concerns.

Dr. Otott concedes there are problems, but said he is ready to tackle them. He also said he will meet with attorney James and the remaining parents when time permits.
