Officials: 14th Street water leak could affect water services

ATLANTA (FOX 5 Atlanta) - The city of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said they spend Wednesday repairing two leaks on a valve and a large pipe joint at the 14th Street Waterworks Facility near the Hemphill Steam Pump Station.

Officials said the leaks were contained as of Wednesday afternoon.

DWM will remove and replace the malfunctioning valve and pipe. Wednesday was the second day crews dealt with the leak.

"While every attempt will be made to complete the repair without impacting water service to our customers, there is the possibility of a service disruption due to the proximity of the incident to critical DWM assets," DWM said in a statement. "Out of an abundance of caution, we are notifying all critical facilities to be prepared to initiate a continuity of service plan in the event of an unexpected loss of water service."

Water officials have yet to confirm if there were any more leaks.

Once excavation is done, DWM said it will determine how long it will take to complete the repairs.
