'Companion' leaves woman for dead in Coweta County pedestrian car crash: witness

Authorities have now identified a woman who was hit and killed while walking on a Coweta County Road last Friday night. The Georgia State Patrol say the woman was 42-year-old Candance Sabot of Newnan.

What we know:

There are two investigations regarding this pedestrian fatality on Hammock Road in Coweta County. The state patrol is investigating the woman’s death. The Sheriff’s office is trying to identify her companion who ran away before help arrived.

The incident happened on a long straightaway on Hammock Road last Friday night at around 11.

Body camera video provided by the sheriff’s office shows the blue Mercedes-Benz they say hit a Sabot. She was apparently walking on the road with a male companion.

Dig deeper:

A witness who called 911 told authorities she and her husband were driving down Hammock Road when the Mercedes passed them on a double yellow line and struck the woman who was walking in the opposite direction.

Another caller told 911 the man who was with the woman was upset and yelling after the collision, but then said he had to leave and took off into the woods.

Minutes later, 911 received additional calls of a shot fired near the scene. The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office says the companion who ran away was in a neighbor’s yard and the homeowner confronted him. They say the man brandished a firearm and the homeowner opened fire.

Another call came from inside the Mercedes-Benz from a passenger who reported the couple was walking in the roadway and the driver did not see them.

The sheriff’s office is trying to identify the companion to learn more about why he left the scene and why he would allegedly flash a gun when confronted by a nearby neighbor.
