Mom opens fire on home invaders

DeKalb Country Police said it was inside the walls of an Ellenwood home that a mom under siege took up arms to protect her family.

“It started with three gunshots I heard last night and it was really loud,” said neighbor Furaha Merritt, “I heard it over my headphones."

Authorities said around 10 p.m. Friday night, three men broke into a house through the back door. As they were carrying items out, police say they were spotted by the children who live there who told their mother.

According to police she's a DeKalb County Sheriff's Office corrections officer who opened fire on the home invaders. Police told FOX 5 News one suspect was shot as all three fled the scene.

Neighbors caught sight of the suspects attempting to escape.

DeKalb Police eventually caught the trio, who they said had a bogus story as to how one of them got shot.

The injured suspect was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment while the other two were hauled off to the DeKalb County Jail.
