Are the metro Atlanta roads ready for this winter storm?
ATLANTA - As a winter storm approaches, both the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and the city of Atlanta are taking proactive measures to ensure public safety. GDOT crews have already been dispatched to brine interstates and other critical routes.
"There is something coming our way and we’re still not exactly sure the scope of what will be impacted," said GDOT spokesperson Natalie Dale.
Preparing for possible icy roads
What we know:
In anticipation of the storm, GDOT is working closely with the National Weather Service and emergency operation agencies across the state. The department is hoping for the best but bracing for the worst, as the weather remains unpredictable. "Should this storm shift north, then we’re going to get road impacts immediately because of the road temperatures, because of the temperatures outside," Dale explained. "Any impacts we do get are going to be immediately felt in terms of reduced road conditions, so we have to work to treat that."
GDOT has prioritized pre-treating interstates, state routes, bridges, and overpasses, focusing on high-traffic areas and routes providing access to hospitals and urgent care centers. The Motor Carrier Compliance Division is assisting by escorting brining details, while Department of Public Safety Troopers and Officers are on standby for any service calls related to the winter weather.
The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) has pretreated all priority roads and advises residents to stay off the roads if possible.
What's next:
Residents are urged to avoid travel in the most impacted areas whenever possible. For those who must travel, GDOT advises exercising caution and allowing ample space for crews to safely continue their work. "GDOT urges you stay off the roads even if they look okay," Dale emphasized.
Winter storm: GDOT says stay off the roads
The Georgia Department of Transportation has been working since Sunday morning to pre-treat the interstates, state routes and bridges before winter weather hits Georgia on Tuesday. A GDOT spokesperson said that at this point, they're hoping people can just stay off the roads.
How to drive on icy roads
What you can do:
Driving on icy roads demands patience and caution. By preparing your vehicle and adjusting your driving habits, you can help ensure a safer journey during winter weather.
How to drive safely on icy roads: Driving on icy roads can be treacherous, but following safety precautions can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Here are key tips for navigating icy conditions effectively.
Prepare before you drive: Ensure your vehicle is winter-ready. Check tire tread depth, inflate tires to the recommended pressure, and consider using snow tires or chains in particularly icy areas. Keep an emergency kit in your car, including blankets, a flashlight, and non-perishable food.
Reduce your speed: Speed is one of the primary factors in icy-road accidents. Drive well below the posted speed limit, and maintain a consistent pace. Avoid sudden accelerations or braking, which can cause your vehicle to lose traction.
Increase following distance: Leave at least five to six seconds of space between your car and the vehicle in front of you. This extra room gives you more time to react if the vehicle ahead stops suddenly.
Brake and accelerate gently: Sudden movements can lead to skidding. Apply the brakes gently and start accelerating slowly to maintain control. If your car is equipped with anti-lock brakes (ABS), let the system do its job by maintaining steady pressure on the brake pedal.
Steer smoothly: Avoid sharp turns or jerky steering motions. If your car begins to skid, remain calm and steer in the direction you want the car to go, avoiding overcorrection.
Be cautious on bridges and overpasses: These surfaces freeze more quickly than regular roads. Approach them with extra caution and avoid sudden maneuvers while crossing.
Know how to handle skids: If your car starts to slide, take your foot off the accelerator and avoid slamming the brakes. Steer gently in the direction you want to go and wait for the tires to regain traction.
Stay alert: Keep your eyes on the road and anticipate potential hazards, such as black ice or vehicles losing control. Avoid distractions like cell phones, even when conditions seem manageable.
Avoid unnecessary travel: If the weather forecast predicts icy conditions, postpone non-essential trips whenever possible. Safety should always take precedence over convenience.
