Man with machete shot in DeKalb County

DeKALB COUNTY, Ga. - DeKalb County police shot a machete-wielding man Wednesday morning, the department said.

Officers’ efforts to “de-escalate [with a] baton [were] unsuccessful,” DeKalb County police said in a Twitter post.

An officer responded to the 3000 block of Green Oaks Circle and made contact with a male who fit the description of the suspicious person. The officer attempted to speak with the male, but police said he became agitated and aggressive. Investigators said the man produced a weapon resembling a machete and advanced on the officer in an aggressive manner. Police then said the officer attempted to gain control of the man with his baton, but was unsuccessful. Investigators said the officer then drew his duty weapon and fired shots, striking the male. "Many of our neighbors called 911", said resident Julie Carson.  Carson was working in her home office when she heard the gunfire at around eight Wednesday morning. "And I jumped up and looked out the window and saw the squad car and an officer standing by the squad car with a gun."

The officer and responding EMS personnel rendered aid to the male. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital where he later died. No officers were injured during this incident.

A two to three foot piece of sheet metal fashioned into a machete like weapon as well as two other knives were found on scene, according to investigators.

The body of the deceased man was sent to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be conducted.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will conduct an independent investigation to determine what occurred during the incident. When the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office for any action they deem appropriate.
