ATLANTA (FOX 5 Atlanta) - A man was shot and killed in northwest Atlanta just hours after his family said he was released from jail.
It happened in the 1800 block of Newman Place. Atlanta police said they received a call just before 10 p.m. Monday of a person shot.
Officers said they found the victim dead upon arrival. The victim's parents identified him as 25-year-old Lawrence Roberts. They told FOX 5 hours before the shooting, Roberts got out after serving seven months in jail.
The parents said Roberts came home, changed his clothes and went to a party at the end of the block. They never saw him alive again.
According to Roberts' mother, he went to the party to see an ex-girlfriend. The parents also said Roberts planned to begin the Georgia Works program in the morning on Tuesday and had hopes of turning around his life.
Police said they have one person in custody and believe that person is the suspected shooter. No information has been released about the suspect.
Details surrounding a motive or the circumstances leading up to the shooting were not immediately available.
