A Gwinnett County man is dead after officials say he rescued his father and was trying to save his mother from a dangerous house fire early Saturday morning.

The fatal house fire happened on the 900 block of Glasgow Drive in Lilburn at around 3:30 a.m.

When Gwinnett Fire crews got to the scene, neighbors told them that there could be people inside the home. During the search and rescue operation, officials quickly removed two unconscious victims from the house. One died before he could be transported to the hospital. The other, a woman, was quickly transported in critical condition.

After a search, police found one other victim already outside the home with moderate injuries. After being transported, he told officials that he was the father of the man who had died.

The man said that he had woke up to the smoke alerted his son, who helped him get out. The son then ran back inside to save his mother, but was killed in the attempt.

The home was declared a "total loss" due to the fire, officials said.

Investigators have determined the fire started in a second kitchen that is an add on, but the cause is currently unknown.
