A 70-year-old Newnan man faces charges in a bizarre case of animal cruelty.

Officers say Jon Schuck tied up his dog outside a coffee shop on the town square Tuesday morning and left it outside in the heat while he was inside drinking coffee.

Authorities received several calls from concerned citizens.

An animal control officer was reportedly on the way when a passerby alerted police that the dog had died.

Police say Schuck stepped outside and placed a newspaper over his dead dog's head and then went back inside to finish his beverage.

The dog's body has been sent to Auburn University for a necropsy.
