Long lines for last Saturday to vote early in 6th District runoff

ATLANTA - Voters in Georgia's 6th Congressional District packed polling places in Fulton, DeKalb County, and Cobb Counties on Saturday on the last weekend day of early voting in the runoff race between Republican Karen Handel and Democrat Jon Ossoff.

Georgia's Secretary of State said more than 75,000 voters have already voted in the highly publicized 6th congressional district's special election.

FOX 5 News found wait times between 20 minutes to an hour with some lines out the door into the early Georgia summer heat.

The candidates also took the chance to rally their base to head to the polls. Handel stumped Cobb County Saturday morning and rallied supporters at an event at Williams Brothers BBQ. Ossoff also greeted voters in Cobb County and volunteers canvassed communities to get out the vote.

Voters said the get out the vote effort worked to get them to cast their ballots. Some said they wanted to use the election to send their own message to Washington.

Officials recommend that voters check their county's election office website for more details about early voting.

Election Day is June 20.
