House fire kills two in Toccoa
TOCCOA, Ga. - Fire Investigators with Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens office have ruled a house fire that claimed the lives of two women Friday evening in Stephens County accidental.
Killed in the 6:30 p.m. fire were Gwendolyn Bohanan, 68, and her daughter Amy Bohanan, 39. Their doublewide mobile home, located at 50 Linda Drive, Toccoa, Ga., was destroyed.
"My Investigators determined that the fire originated in the living room of the mobile home," Hudgens said. "The fire was the result of an electric space heater being placed too close to a sofa."
The bodies of both victims were discovered in a rear bedroom of the home. The investigation revealed that Gwendolyn died while attempting to rescue Amy who was immobile following a recent back surgery. Amy's four children were able to escape the blaze unharmed.
The Stephens County Fire Department and the Stephens County Sheriff's Office assisted with the investigation.
