Group calls on Georgia lawmakers to ban assault weapons

Gun owners and gun control activists gathered at the State Capitol Wednesday morning to call for action from the Georgia Legislature.

Attendees said they want to see a fair hearing on House Bill 10, a bill that would enact a ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines.

Proponents said their request is inspired in part by last month's school shooting in South Florida.

The group said it also comes after Republican Chairman Alan Powell told them the bill was dead on arrival.

It's unlikely any kind of ban will pass this session as the legislature has already passed its crossover deadline.

That's the last day for bills to make it out of one chamber and move forward to the other chamber for debate.
