Gov. Deal suspends Snellville's mayor
SNELLVILLE, Ga. - Governor Nathan Deal has made the suspension of Snellville’s mayor official Wednesday.
Mayor Tom Witts voluntarily suspended himself from his duties last month following an indictment in September on 66 criminal charges. Most of the charges accused Witts of tax evasion, using his business to make money from the city, and making false statements while in office.
Gov. Deal issued an executive order suspending Witts pending the outcome of the case or until his term expires in 2019.
The mayor had been under investigation for more than 4 years.
Witts was elected as Snellville's Mayor in November after serving as a city councilman since 2009.
