Police are investigating an accident which claimed the life of a 3-year-old Chamblee girl on Wednesday.

It happened at the Huntington Terraces Apartments located at 4727 Buford Highway around 6:15 p.m. Chamblee Police said an SUV struck the girl in the parking lot in front of her apartment. She died at the scene.

Police said the driver of the SUV remained at the scene and was cooperative with officers. Investigators said the driver crested the hill at the complex, and may not have seen the girl, who was possibly playing alone in the parking lot. Speed and reckless driving do not appear to be a factor, according to police.

Police cannot say whether the driver could face charges. The name of the girl has not yet been released.

"[The mother] was basically on the ground with the little girl. She was crying," said neighbor Jose Perez, who said he called 911 when the mother asked for an ambulance.

"The mother is not good," said friend and neighbor Maribel Sanchez to FOX 5 in Spanish. "I feel so sorry for her. A child is a child. And a mother is in pain when she loses her child," she said.

FOX 5 News could not reach the family for comment Wednesday evening.
