Georgia Power Outages | Power restored to nearly all Atlanta metro customers
ATLANTA - Power crews worked hard to get service restored for their customers with chilly temperatures still lingering.
As of Saturday evening, Georgia Power said its crews had restored power to over 340,000 customers since the beginning of the storm.
Georgia Power credited its new smart grid technology and pre-positioned teams for their rapid response.
Current outage numbers
By the numbers: As of 10:45 p.m. on Saturday, there were only 147 active outages affecting 961 customers. Meanwhile, 2.7 million customers had been served.
The area most affected in the late night hours appeared to be Clayton County.
When will power be restored?
What they're saying: The City of Atlanta said power crews were working to restore power to all customers by midnight.
Progress had been hampered earlier by freezing rain, icy roads, and falling trees. But by Saturday afternoon, Georgia Power service had been restored to nearly every metro Atlanta customer.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Georgia Power acknowledged the challenges crews were facing due to icy conditions.
"As our crews anticipated based on the forecast, additional freezing rain and falling trees have caused power outages as the sun has gone down. We understand how important power is, especially in this cold. Know that we are committed to working safely and as quickly as possible to restore your power," the utility posted.
A Georgia Power lineman reiterated the sentiment in a video shared on X. "Conditions overnight remain challenging with icy roads and winds, but as long as it is safe—we will be working."
With winds picking up, officials are urging residents to stay off the roads and report any downed power lines.
Atlanta weather | Sunday forecast
As the snow melts away, Georgians are in for another night of frigid temperatures. Overnight lows are expected to drop into the teens and 20s.
On Sunday morning, most areas will feel a bit of relief as temperatures rise to the upper 30s and low 40s. FOX 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Laurann Robinson is hoping for some sun to continue to melt the ice away.
