Georgia environmental group celebrating its 20th anniversary
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. (AP) - An advocacy group is celebrating 20 years of work dedicated to environmental conservation on the Georgia coast.
The Brunswick News reports (http://bit.ly/2rzY03k ) the Center for a Sustainable Coast was established in 1997 with funding from a grant by the Sapelo Foundation. An anniversary ceremony was set for Saturday in Savannah.
For two decades the group has given conservationists a voice on issues ranging from clean water to climate change.
David Kyler, the center's executive director, says it also played an important role in launching five river keeper organizations along the Georgia coast from Savannah to St. Marys.
Most recently, the center has been fighting a proposal to rezone privately owned land on Cumberland Island. Critics say the plan could open portions of the federally protected island to new development.
