CARROLL COUNTY, Ga. - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a man was shot and killed by a Carroll County deputy late Monday night.
Investigators told FOX 5 deputies were called out to the West Lakeview Estates in unincorporated Temple at around 10:38 p.m. after someone saw a suspicious person with what appeared to be a rifle or a shotgun.
Two deputies responded to the scene and started looking for the suspect, who police say they later identified as 33-year-old David Willoughby. They found him in a nearby wooded area and said he was pointing what appeared to be a rifle at one of the deputies.
Investigators said the deputies repeatedly told the man to put the gun down, but he refused. That's when both deputies opened fire and shot the man.
The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled at the GBI's Crime Lab.
Carroll County Sheriff's Office officials said no deputies suffered any injuries. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation.
Investigators aren't sure if the Willoughby fired his weapon, which turned out to be a bb or pellet gun. Investigators said his father lives in the neighborhood where the shooting took place, but they have not said if he lives there as well.
Authorities said they are investigating whether Willoughby made previous threats in the area and if he possibly suffered from some form of mental illness.
