GBI: Off-duty officer shot armed man at apartment complex

ATLANTA (AP) — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shooting incident involving an off-duty police officer an armed man at Atlanta apartment complex.

GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles says 41-year-old Pedro Maldonado was shot by the Atlanta Police Officer on early Saturday. The officer was not injured. Maldonado is in critical but stable condition at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Miles says Maldonado and 48-year-old Raul Delacruz were standing in front of Maldonado's apartment before an armed black man approached them and robbed Delacruz of cash. Several witnesses heard gunshots.

Miles says the officer just completed a shift and heard the shots. The officer saw Maldonado running with a gun in his hand. The officer fired multiple shots, striking Maldonado when encountering the suspect.

The name of the officer has not been released.
